From Jozi to the World: DRAGG’s Visionary Album ‘Mixed Feelings

Alternative hip-hop visionary DRAGG brews an elixir of emotions in his album ‘Mixed Feelings’, swirling with lyrical rap and alluring nocturnal R&B flavours showcased in eight unforgettable tracks with features by OwToo, Korusbird, Tania DeBarros and Amandi Music, brought together by the deft touch of Platinum-selling producer gTbeats.

This transformational album tells the story of a young man grappling with romance through to heartbreak, questioning self-worth and the reality of love. Despite visual impairment, DRAGG shows unflinching honesty and insight with a visionary fusion of auto-tuned cloud rap, trap soul, throwback R&B and hints of afro soul.

About the song ‘2am In Montecasino’:In ‘2 am in Montecasino,’ I aimed to capture the essence of late-night chill and the fulfilment of a childhood fantasy against the captivating backdrop of the Palazzo Hotel and Montecasino. It’s about the satisfaction of realising a dream I’ve carried since I was a kid – spending a night in that lavish atmosphere. It embodies the allure of luxury and the laid-back vibe of Fourways, one of Johannesburg’s nightlife hotspots. Picture tequila shots pouring, a mesmerizing companion by your side, and a vibe that’s unmistakably Jozi.

About the album:Working on ‘Mixed Feelings’ was truly a journey of self-discovery for me. I poured my heart and soul into every lyric, every melody, to create an album that speaks to the complexities of love and relationships from a man’s perspective. One of the challenges I faced was finding the balance between vulnerability and strength in my music. I wanted to share my innermost thoughts and feelings without losing the authenticity that defines my sound. Collaborating with talented producers and musicians was a highlight of the creative process. Their input and expertise helped bring my vision to life, elevating the music to new heights. What started as a collection of ideas and concepts gradually took shape into a cohesive body of work that I’m incredibly proud of.”

Crossing continents with influences from childhood to adulthood, DRAGG offers listeners an alternative to mainstream noise — a sonic journey that transcends borders and embraces the imperfections of the heart.

History

Lawrence Sean Sibanda (aka DRAGG) was born in Johannesburg in 1993 to Zimbabwean immigrants, and at 12 he faced a life-altering battle with meningitis, losing his eyesight in the process. Not letting his health complications become a hindrance, he set out to accomplish another vision with his remarkable ability to rhyme.

Johannesburg’s rich music scene shaped DRAGG’s taste, leading him to embrace SA Hip Hop, R&B and Kwaito. Influenced by Skwatacamp, TK, Mandoza and Zola 7, his musical journey unfolded.

In 2006 DRAGG moved to the UK. It was then, at the height of the 50 Cent and G-Unit era, that he fully immersed himself in the culture. West Coast rapper The Game became a pivotal influence, with his album ‘Doctor’s Advocate’ serving as a defining moment that propelled DRAGG into the world of hip hop. Opening for The Game in 2010 marked DRAGG’s full-circle connection with his rap idol.

DRAGG has shared stages with UK icons like Wretch 32 and DJ Ace. His collaborators include Lady Leshurr, OD Hunte, Paigey Cakey and Millyz, and his 2024 projects embrace even further global collaborations with unrestrained blending of styles to elevate his craft.
