‘URBAN FU$E’ drop a new groove and beat driven hip-hop sound, fused with classic blues hooks and soulful melody on new single ‘Trap Blues’

Do you ever get that feeling, when you’re listening to music and suddenly, it feels more like a wake-up call than an actual song?

Like you’ve been living in a bubble, somewhere off in your own mind and then you hear this killer intro and it’s just like nothing you’ve ever heard before?

That was exactly what I felt when I heard Urban Fu$e’s “Broke Blues”. I don’t remember how I came upon it, I just remember the sound blasting through my headphones and jolting me out of my sear. Like boy, I was not expecting that.

And it wasn’t just the novelty or the obvious surprise of a song starting playing out of the blue. It’s the same feeling each time I re-listen to it. This tune has such a classy blues intro that you think you’ve been transported to this whole other place, somewhere back in the 50s, when they still used to play it like that.

Not saying the tune is old, though, just that it puts you in mind of the glory days of blues music. A truly down and out tune that gets you thinking. About life, about luck, about hoping for a better day tomorrow.

As you can probably guess from the name, it’s a song about lacking money. Feeling down, like you don’t honestly know how you’re going to cover this month’s rent. It has a good message, too.

These people, these wonderfully talented and creative people over at Urban Fu$e wrote this song as part of a campaign to raise financial awareness and educate the people of Vietnam and Cameroon about finance, which is a pretty cool reason to write a song, I’d say.

Their last one was pretty awesome, too. A song about the late great NBA giant Kobe Bryant, a track called “Scoreboard”, that came out just one day after Bryant’s untimely death. So yeah, you can definitely say Urban Fu$e like putting out music with a message.

But getting back to their latest release, part of their upcoming album, DLW2 (set to release at the beginning of June), what really gets me about “Broke Blues” is the ingenuity, the way it smoothly switches from that deep, classic blues rhythm and voice to a slick rap. It carries the same message, naturally. But I think the rap in the second part of the tune really brings the message home.

Urban Fu$e show their immense creative potential in the mixing of the song as well. A track that combines elements of dance music, blues, a little jazz maybe and some rap is definitely no ordinary piece, which is what makes it such a unique experience.

Really, do yourself a favour and go listen to “Broke Blues” right now.
